To The Moon!

Holly and I were watching this show on "NatGeo" (National Geographic Channel) last night. It was talking about these people (aka morons) out there that believe NASA's missions to the moon were all hoaxes. Not only do they not believe anyone has landed, they think that we will never go back. They cited pretty mundane arguments. Let me see if I can recap:

  • The technology didn't exist for us to land on the moon.
  • The flag was "blowing in the wind" as the skeptics put it.
  • There were non-parallel shadows, which they concluded were from a second light source and they said there should have been only one... the sun.
  • The contrast on the shots the astronauts did take was not extreme enough for the skeptics. Their thinking is that if you take a picture of something and one side of it is facing the sun and the side is not, the dark side should be completely black... no reflective or ambient light allowed... no exceptions (being an amateur photographer and generally NOT a moron, this one was my favorite).
  • The astronauts would have been physically unable to snap such good photos with the cameras they had and the suits they were wearing. They referenced something about the vacuum of space being too great for the astronauts to move as easily as they did.
  • They said that, as part of this grandiose hoax, NASA broadcast the video of the astronauts walking in half-speed. See, their argument is that if you double the speed of the original broadcasts, it is clear that it was filmed here and not on the moon because their movements are much more "earth-like."

Then the show laid the final blow. They interviewed this dude that works at an observatory in Texas who shoots a laser up to a device on the moon to track the earth's position. You can clearly see a strobe on the moon's surface after a couple of minutes indicating that the laser is being reflected back. I doubt aliens put that device there. This guy says that these skeptics have never contacted him or asked to come and see the operation. The devices were placed on the moon by ASTRONAUTS THAT F'ING LANDED THERE. Idiots!

I love the fact that these people, who have never been outside Earth's atmosphere and have probably never been outside their own counties, are such experts about an environment their simple minds cannot even begin to fathom. We know so little about that environment yet a an ex-non-engineered-employee (which I took to mean he was a janitor) of the company that built the Saturn V rocket, who by the way lives in the Nevada desert and owns a cat sanctuary, can sit in his ratty-ass la-z-boy and proclaim that he has physical proof that manned missions to the moon were a hoax. The show could've done a better job getting some reputable skeptics. Maybe that was the point.

I was yelling at my TV last night. Seriously. Ask Holly.

New Stuff

So I got a new job. I am now officially an ex-state employee. I actually started on 3/17/08 so I've been here a couple of weeks. Yes, I do like it in fact. I am getting a chance to do my developer thing now so it's going to be exciting.

Oh yeah, and I got myself a new truck also. I don't really have pictures of it online yet but they're coming shortly. I'll see if I can post some soon. It's a jet black 2008.5 Nissan Titan 4x4 Crew Cab. It's f'ing awesome and gets all of about 15 MPG too! Yippee!

I guess that's about it for my new stuff. Fun fun.

P.S. Still working (read slacking off) on vanlew dot net version 2. It'll happen one day. Hopefully.

Wow

It's been a while. I've left you all (OK, nobody's really reading this but I like to think that people are) in the dark for a couple months.

I'm working on a new version of my site which will hopefully be up soon. I got my hands on Google's .NET API and have been fiddling with the photo gallery.

Ideally, I'd like to use my page with my Google Picasa web albums. I've gotten the initial albums to come through but I'm now working on the album details. Stay tuned for that!

Th-th-th-th-that's all folks!

Dad’s Birthday

... is tomorrow. That is, it would be if he was still alive. It's been 1.5 years since he died and this is only the second birthday I've been through. I wonder if it will ever get easier...

Turducken?

Man, I love Thanksgiving. It has to be one of my favorite holidays of the year. Which is why I'm sitting here at 11:50PM on Tuesday night (11/20) wondering why the HELL I decided to get my wisdom teeth pulled last Friday. Talk about bad timing... I don't think this could get any worse. OK well I suppose it could but just bear with me for a second.

This wisdom teeth pulling business hurts like a bitch. I got three pulled and Holly got all four pulled. Yes, yes... we did it together. Commiserating is fun when we're both drugged up on percocet. :)

Anyway, now my jaw is killing me and there's only one more day till I need to be in top form for ripping apart turkey legs and digging into mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. I seriously hope that my mouth starts feeling better or me and the blender are going to become very good friends on Thursday.

*Pops a couple percocets* Well, off to bed! :)

Survivor… San Diego

Well, there were a few moments where we thought we might lose someone but we all made it through Kev's 30th birthday bash. We made it through rumors of puking in public restrooms (no names will be mentioned), an incredibly awesome 24-hour mexican food joint in Mission Beach and an airport shuttle driver (You rock, Shawn!) that saved us on several occasions.

We survived a little drama, a little rain and a lot of booze. We made it through some poker, some more mexican food and a 30" pizza (yes, there are pictures of the gargantuan pie), and a very upset girl who was told to watch out as a couple nines were coming through (LOL Chris).

I'll post (the appropriate) pictures if/when I get them.

Until next time.

Someone’s Getting Old

It's the once-in-a-lifetime big Kev's (oh yeah!) 30th birthday. Invite everyone you know! Just kidding. We're going to San Diego to get wasted.... err, live like rock stars.... err you know. The things you do when someone turns 30.

Anyway, it should be a good time. Spouses were unofficially uninvited so Holly is going to Mexico with my Aunt Julie and my sister. I hope she can get across the border on Monday. I hear it's a nightmare coming back into the states. Way to go Bush. Don't even get me started. That's another topic altogether.

So yeah. Just passing some time before we meet up at Kevin's house and drive to the airport to hitch a ride on the Southwest train to San Diego. Choo Choo! Watch out SD, here we come!

Signing off for now... *gulps beer* Aaaahhhh.

Wish we were there

Since Holly and I had Friday through Monday off, we decided to beat the (relative) heat and go up to the cabin.

As soon as we got there, we realized it my have been a bad idea. It reached all of about 55 degrees and dropped into the low 30s at night. Man, it was cold!

We got there Friday afternoon and left Sunday morning at about 7:30AM. We wanted to be home in time to watch the Cardinals play (what a game that was, by the way).

Anyway, it's now Sunday afternoon and I'm on the back patio typing this. It's about 85 degrees right now and absolutely beautiful.

Wish you were here?
